Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow says it’s time for Congress to step up to protect the Mueller investigation.
The White House says President Donald Trump and his embattled Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein spoke on Monday and will meet Thursday at the White House amid uncertainty about Rosenstein's fate.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump and Rosenstein had "an extended conversation to discuss the recent news stories" at Rosenstein's request Monday.
Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia election meddling, had been expecting to be fired Monday following after critical comments he made about Trump.
When they meet on Thursday, it’s expected the president will either accept his resignation or fire him.
Stabenow says Congress has time to protect the Russia investigation before someone else is appointed to oversee the probe.
“Depending on what happens, we’re going to have to come together and make sure this investigation can continue,” says Stabenow (D-Mich). “We can do things very quickly. You can do things in a day. If Republican leadership wanted to do that.”
The Mueller investigation has been criticized by the president’s supporters.
Stabenow notes that the probe has already produced dozens of charges and multiple convictions and guilty pleas.
